DESCRIPTION:

As we can see, this building is a basketball pavilion which consist of 3 small courts and a green section of stands for animation. It has a rectangular form. Even it doesn’t appear on the photo there are windows in both sides of the basketball pavilion to contribute to the illumination and ventilation. Also there is an emergency exit at the top right part of the building. Finally I would like to highlight the particular structure of the roof which i guess is like that because the only pillars that support the building are located at the walls.

ANSWERS TO Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6

This spot is the basketball court where I train. Basically, I have selected this place due the sentimental value it has for me. As I been playing there for many years, for me is like being at home when I play there. I feel that is what makes me be at ease. I believe that is much more important the connection we establish with a building than if the building is cooler, bigger, smaller, etc. However the building must be functional and in that case, when it rains, the roof leaks which is a huge issue. So we could say that this building have a disruptive element which is the roof. As I said before these spot has a sentimental value for me so I don’t believe that I would be able to feel what I feel there in other places. The particular conditions of this space have a considerable influence on its occupants, for example, when it rains, due to the leaks the practices are usually called off. So taking into account what I said, if something should be changed, that would be definitely the roof.

MY REFLECTION AFTER READING ATMOSPHERES BY PETER ZUMTHOR

All along the book, Peter Zumthor tries to transmit his way of perceiving architecture. He talks about the different feelings when being moved by a spot. He makes us understand that it is a set of sensations, qualities, stimulus, emotions, … what moves you from a building and an environment. To explain this, he offers different arguments to defend why architecture creates atmospheres.

After reading the following book, PA1-Text Step 2_Zumthor-Atmospheres.pdf (upv.es) , my perspective of what architecture means has changed drastically.

I have realized that architecture is just not about structures, spaces or buildings. Instead, is quite more than just that. As Peter Zumtho tries to explain in his book, when we talk about architecture, moreover talking about spaces, buildings, structures or even forms, we talk about feelings, connection, atmosphere, emotions, etc. So we could say that construction is not just a physical or an aesthetic phenomenon, but rather a philosophical one.

Basically one of the main conclusions I have drawn from this book is how it works the exchange of feelings between the people and the different small details of the construction or even how these (such as colors, materials, title forms, etc) as well as the environment around the building can influence our thoughts or our perspective of the building. This concept of atmosphere is quite similar to when we see a person and instantly we get a first impression of them. Architecture works basically like that. When I enter to a building, I see a space and I perceive an atmosphere and in tenths of seconds I have a feeling of what it is.

In general, I have learnt pretty much reading Peter’s book, I’ve got my mind and my perspective of what architecture is really broadened thanks to his book, so I recommend it to anyone who is starting to get into architecture as it will help you.
